People tend to be at different stages when wanting to work with a sport psychologist. What makes someone the 'Best Sport Psychologist'?
The answer to this question comes down to your personal preferences. Each sport psychologist will be different, even though 'psychologist A' and 'psychologist B' might use the same approaches and have a similar philosophy, you will have a different experience with each sport psychologist. It might take a couple of conversations to work out which psychologist will best suit you. Normally, sport psychologists will offer a free consultation at the beginning, which is usually around 20 minutes. Take this time to get a better understanding of who this sport psychologist is, how they like to work, and then you can start to picture if you think the two of you will work well together. Don’t worry if you feel like you don’t click with the first sport psychologist you talk to, there are so many fantastic sport psychologists out there.
Just as a final point I want to say that working with a sport psychologist doesn’t have to be about fixing a problem but could instead be about stepping up in levels. You might be good, but you could be great. You might be excellent, but you could be world class. At the top end of performances, the physical/skill levels will be similar, what separates the best from the rest are the mental aspects.
